Describe Him: King
Right now, Christ is not physically reigning as King here on earth. But one
day He will be King for all eternity, sitting on David’s throne. Here’s why we
know He will:
In 2 Samuel 7:12-13 God makes a covenant with David and says that David’s seed will forever be on his throne.
Psalm 89:34-37 records God declaring that His covenant with David cannot be broken. This covenant will be fulfilled and will stand forever.
As I was thinking about the Davidic Covenant, I couldn’t help but wonder how we know for certain that this is ultimately fulfilled in Christ. So I did some digging and here’s what I found:
Isaiah 9:6-7 prophesies that One would come who would be The mighty God and whose “government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David…”
Then in Luke 1:30-33 it gets even more specific: The angel tells Mary that her son would be named Jesus and that God would “give unto Him the throne of his father David: and he shall reign over the house of Jacob forever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.”
I know there’s lots more that could be said about this incredible covenant, our covenant-keeping God, and Christ physically reigning as King some day, but I’ll keep it simple and stop here.
However, if you want to do some further studying, check out Jeremiah 33:17-22 for an explanation of how this covenant can be broken, as well as a hint at another incredible aspect of Who Christ is—He’s more than just King! (But you’re going to have to look it up for yourself—I’m not going to spoil it for you!) It’s pretty amazing!
