Bible Reading 2017

2017 is coming to an end and 2018 is just around the corner!  Where did 2017 go?!?!?  2017 has been a great year--it's hard to surpass the highlight of having a Little Girl to bring sunshine and joy into our lives!

Anyway, it seems like towards the end of every year (or the beginning of the New Year) we begin thinking about starting new Bible study or reading habits.  While I'm still working on the chronological reading plan that I mentioned last year, I have also been working on a Galatians through 2 Thessalonians Journible.

I just love the idea behind Journibles:

Write out the passage and make comments as you work through the verses.
It's that simple.

In fact, the best part about Journibles is that the idea behind it is repeatable--anyone can do it!  It is so simple!  While you can purchase from Amazon the actual Journible that has a nice hard cover, along with prompts for comments and notations for where to write each verse, you can also apply the principle of copying Scripture using just a plain notebook, a pen or pencil, and your Bible!  That's all there is to it!

(As you can see from this picture, Journibles are essentially blank pages before you start copying verses and making comments!)

The simple process of  writing down every. single. word. of the passage really does make a big difference in how you read the passage.  Because you have to think about every single word--in fact, every single letter of each word--you notice lots of little details that are often overlooked.

The exercise of writing out each verse also gives the mind time to work on processing what it is reading (because we write slower than our mind reads.) As I write, I have found myself asking questions about the words and phrases I'm writing, and in turn, often finding some answers to some of my questions!

Right now, I'm working in Galatians 5.  As I write, it has stood out to me the strong language Paul uses in this chapter.  When Paul uses phrases like severed from Christ, and fallen away from grace, and emasculate themselves, you can't help but get the vibe that he feels rather passionately about this other gospel that is being preached!  He's not joking around about how serious this is!  On the other hand though, when, in the same chapter, he makes tender statements like the hope of righteousness, and brothers, and through love serve one another, you see that he still cares deeply for the Galatians.

And these are just a few observations from writing out the verses, word for word.

Anyway...I have been so encouraged during this process of writing out the book of Galatians and am super thankful that something as simple as reading and writing out Scripture has  proven to be a valuable tool in the process of learning from the Word!
